Room for a Bible on My Desk

Just cleaned my desk last night. This morning I had my devotional time and set my Bible aside, two Bibles, actually, stacked to my left. And then I thought there was probably a better place for them, a place I could put them off the surface of my desk so I can work. Hold that thought.

I’ve read a couple things lately that have me thinking. As a Christian writer, this post really spoke to me. Agent Karen Ball discusses including God in story and how old television series used to do just that, and it came across as genuine. We’ve lost that in our culture.

Then, during my devotional time this morning I read Isaiah chapter 1. There’s a clear call to repentance in Isaiah’s opening chapter. A call for a nation of individuals to come back to the Truth, to dive into the Word, to repent of ungodly deeds. A reminder that God honor obedience above sacrifice and that He longs to wash us clean from our sins. He is a forgiving God who delights to forgive.

“Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the LORD,
“ Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
But if you refuse and rebel,
You shall be devoured by the sword”;
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

There was a time when I didn’t make the Bible a priority in my day. I didn’t read and pray. Thankfully, that’s not the case now. There’s a new grace, a new determination to keep God first in my day.

A new place for the Bible on the “desk” of my life.

Is there room for God’s Word in your day? In your life? Maybe it’s time to clear away the clutter, even the things we think are necessities and make room for the Word in our lives. The Word of God can and will change us if we let it.

It’s time to let it.

I’m making room for the Bible on my desk. How about you?

I've got a Bible on my "desktop" (actually a laptop), so it's the first thing I do each day. If I skip or postpone my special time with God, the day just goes horrible.

I use a free software at http://www.wordsearchbible.com to help me with my quiet time. There are lots of maps and helps that you can also download for free.

Thanks for the reminder to make room for His word.

Thanks for sharing that website/tool, Angie. I use Biblegateway.com to look up Scriptures and use them on FB or on my blogs. I have read Scriptures electronically, but I like holding the Word and marking it up with highlights and dates. ;) Hugs, my friend.

Good word! Clutter is a whole other issue :-0 but a like the analogy of a Bible on my life desk. For me, I get so swamped by the good I must do that I let days go by without refueling, and then there are the migraines that rob parts of my days sometimes. But unless I prioritize what is the truly needed, all else will be shaky at best. Thanks for the reminder!

The Word is such a gift, such a blessing, isn't it, E.C.? I think sometimes too we get caught up in guilt and shame if we don't have daily devos. But God just wants to bless us in the reading of the Word. And refuel us, like you said. Hugs, my new friend.

Love this post, Net! I've grown to cherish my morning time with the Lord. Sometimes I have to make myself stop reading because, hello, kids need breakfast! :) But even if it's just one short passage to meditate on or ponder throughout the day, His Word gives strength and peace like nothing else. It truly does nurture better than food. Thanks for the reminder!

You mention that we've "lost that in our culture," and it made me think about how Christian apologist, Chuck Colson, once wrote that when something goes wrong with our culture, we need to look at the "cult," and in America, that cult is the church. When we look at the "church" as the complete body, I have to wonder at the straying of our hearts and our minds and its effect on the eternal aspect of culture. We need to be in the Word, yes, and we need to be taking that Word into the world...for a seed does little good unless placed in fertile soil. Thanks for sharing.
